Monday is the New Saturday

A career in healthcare means that you sometimes have to work an occasional weekend. This is nothing new, just something that comes with the job. So what that means for me is that I work two Saturdays a month. It isn’t always the best because my work schedule dictates what weekends we can travel, and it becomes especially pestering around the holidays that fall near a weekend and my husband’s hunting or fishing weekends. You really won’t hear me complaining too much though, because I have this amazing job with an even more amazing schedule. So yeah I work two Saturdays a month, but that also means as a salaried employee, I have two Mondays off a month.

Monday is the new Saturday

Let me let you wrap your head around that for a second. Do you know what happens on Monday? The kids go to school and the husband goes to work; that leaves just the dog and me. I have no one in the house to slow me down, I always drink two cups of coffee, I watch all of Good Morning America and Live with Kelly and Ryan, I take the dog for a long run in the hood, and it is really just the most peaceful day in the world. Bottom. Line.

This is how the magic happens ladies

There are two ways this day unfolds for me. I either get all the things done, or I get none of the things done. Either way makes for one happy mom come carpool time Monday afternoon. Whether I am productive or lazy, the day always leaves me feeling relaxed and refreshed.

Productive Mom

MondayIf I know I have a lot to do and cannot have a day of leisure, I make sure to make myself a “to do” list on Sunday night and have my grocery list completed. This allows me to have an early and organized start to my day. I usually clean the house on Sundays so this is something that I don’t waste time doing on my beloved Mondays. Pick up from school will sneak up on you like nothing nice if you have a lot to do and do not stay on task.

This day can be especially useful during the holidays, allowing me to shop during the day when everyone else is at work, wrap presents, or do “non kid friendly” decorating while the kids are at school. Or when we come home from a weekend of traveling and know that I do not have to unpack the kid’s bags and start the laundry before everyone goes to bed. This weekend, I left the kid’s bags and dirty clothes in the car until after school drop off on Monday. Rarely do we get to experience this kind of freedom as moms.

Lazy Mom

So “lazy” mom is truly the best way to spend the day. I normally do at least one thing productive like fluff the clothes in the dryer twenty times before folding, while saving pictures of my dream home to idea books on Houzz. Stroll through every aisle at Target and Costco with no purpose; take my time and not have to bribe children for good behavior with cookies. You can buy all the stuff and there is no one at home to see you unload it. “Yes honey, that table has always been there …” “Of course dear, I have had these shoes for years.” These are the days that I get a manicure, pedicure, or a massage; no one knows that you have even left the house. How does the saying go, “If a tree falls in the forest and there is no one around to hear it, does it make a sound?” Y’all the possibilities are absolutely endless!

So if you ever switch jobs, DO NOT forget to negotiate in a Monday off. I promise you will not regret it!
