Lafayette Moms Need to Know :: Your Guide to September and October

September and October are here! School is in full swing, football is back on and we’re right around the corner from all things pumpkin spice, y’all. Get ready to plan your month in Lafayette, Louisiana with the help of our guide!

This is in no way intended to be a comprehensive event guide. We’ve pulled out a select number of events for your family to enjoy throughout the month. If you have suggestions or additions, please leave a comment!

September 2017 :: Things to Do in Lafayette

September 16 :: Plate Lunch-A-Palooza at Sugar Mill Pond {11:00am – 6:00pm} – Presented by Tony Chachere’s, Plate Lunch-A-Palooza is the ultimate plate lunch experience, celebrating the rich culture of Acadiana’s favorite rib sticking, gravy covered, meal on the go through food, music and fun! Plate Lunch-A-Palooza will be held at the Sugar Mill Pond Town Center on Saturday, September 16th from 11am-6pm. This event is FREE to the public.

September 16 :: Princesses Wear Pants Story Time at Barnes and Noble – In their debut children’s picture book, Savannah Guthrie and Allison Oppenheim team up for a savvy, imaginative story that celebrates fashion and girl power. Join the unflappable Princess Penelope Pineapple as she finds a clever way to get the job done while staying true to herself. Activities to follow.  

September 21 :: 2nd Annual Shadows on the Teche Farm Fest featuring 2 in the Chamber – 5:30pm-8:30pm at Shadows on the Teche – The Farm Fest is a perfect family outing including a petting zoo, games, prizes, a farmers market, cookie decorating and live music by 2 in the Chamber. $10 for the whole family to attend! A great way to kick of the Sugar Cane Festival. 

September 21 :: Banded Together Hurricane Harvey Benefit Concert – Town Square at River Ranch – Enjoy live music by Souled Out from 5:30pm – 8:30pm with your ticket donation going toward the Hurricane Harvey relief effort. Ticket purchases can be made online or at the gate. 

September 23 :: Yoga at The Wurst Biergarten Salutations and Libations: Downtown Lafayette – Like Beer? Like Yoga? Come give our yoga class at the Biergarten a try! The Biergarten is located in the heart of Downtown Lafayette and is family and dog friendly. Each class will offer a slow flow class in the great outdoors at The Wurst Biergarten, with Local Certified Yoga instructor Stacy Barton. You can expect a great workout and of course a delicious cold beer to follow (or during if that’s your thing). The Biergarten is open until 2 a.m. and has a great new menu. So feel free to stick around after class to mingle with your fellow yoga + beer lovers. No experience necessary, all levels welcome. Please bring your own mat and arrive 15 minutes before class begins (10:30am). $16 per person includes yoga class and 1 complimentary 16 0z draft beer.

September 28 :: Rhythms on the River at Town Square at River Ranch: featuring L.A. Roxx – Another fun season of Rhythms on the River kicks off on September 28th! Get your dancing shoes ready! 

September 27-30 :: Tinsel & Treasures presented by Junior League of Lafayette – Junior League of Lafayette presents the 24th annual holiday shopping market. Tinsel & Treasures gives attendees a truly one-stop shopping experience for all of their holiday needs under one roof. The categories of boutique-like shops include jewelry, food, gifts, toys, home décor, apparel and much more!

Second Saturday of every month :: Art Walk Downtown Lafayette – During 2nd Saturday Art Walk, Downtown comes alive as each independent gallery, studio and art house opens their doors for this free event. Art aficionados and casual patrons alike will leave inspired as they explore the Downtown Lafayette Cultural District.

Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays :: South Regional Library – Baby Time, Toddler Time, and Bibliobop  – Check out the calendar including other child friendly events.

October 2017 :: Things To Do In Lafayette 

October 4 :: Toddler Time at the Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum – 10:00am – 11:00am – Parents and their children will enjoy story time, songs with finger play, participate in a hands-on art project, and may explore the museum after the program. This event is free to attend thanks to the generous support of Quest Pediatrics Dentistry.

October 4 :: Symphony in the Sky – located at the Top of the Downtown Parking Garage at 121 E Vermillion St. from 5:30pm – 9:30pm – Get ready for Symphony In The Sky, an evening under the stars, benefitting Acadiana Symphony Orchestra and Conservatory of Music! Your ticket gets you to the top of the Vermillion Street Parking Garage in Downtown Lafayette… come enjoy the best view of Lafayette, treat your taste buds to the most delectable artisan pizza, complimentary wine and beer, and listen to our amazing Acadiana Symphony Orchestra musicians paired with THE best local vocalists, as they take the Beatles to a whole new level! Symphony in the Sky…with Diamonds! October 5 – 8 :: Shrek the Musical presented by Christian Youth Theater (CYT) – Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, Shrek The Musical is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure, featuring all new songs from Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie; Caroline, or Change) and a sidesplitting book by David Lindsay-Abaire. Shrek brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage and proves there’s more to the story than meets the ears. Seven shows to choose from all performed at University of Louisiana Angelle Auditorium: 601 East St. Mary Blvd. Buy your tickets today!

October 6 and 7 :: Twice Round the Block Fall Sale {9:00am – 1:00pm} – located at the Wyndham Garden Lafayette – Join Us for the 2017 Fall TRB Consignment Sale! Selling Children’s FALL clothes, Women’s FALL clothes, and Home Items. Local Vendors also participating. Entry Fee: $3 for the weekend or $1 for one day only. October 7 :: Play Day: Music and Movement at the Hilliard Museum from 10:00am – 2:00pm – Come play with Polly and Lou as we explore Music and Movement through hands on art activities and gallery games. Presented in conjunction with the Festivals Acadiens et Créoles exhibition. Check out the Schedule of Events for more information.

October 7 :: Fit Fest at Moncus Park (the “Horse Farm”) from 7:00am – 12:00pm – Fit Fest is an outdoor festival where locals can come experience every genre of fitness from Acadiana’s top fitness instructors, and have access to education from the best local health and wellness professionals all in one beautiful setting. We are passionate about getting our community moving! All proceeds from the festival go towards Moncus Park (Previously Known as the Horse Farm). October 7-8 :: Pumpkin Patch Craft Show hosted by Covenant United Methodist Church – Join Covenant, and over 30 local vendors for the annual Pumpkin Patch Craft Show Weekend! 

October 8 :: Parent & Child: Blues-Berry Cheesecake hosted by Mix it Up Lafayette. Sunday, October 8 from 4-5:30pm at Mix it Up Lafayette. Join us as we celebrate the newest book from The Alycat Series Alycat and the Monday Blues. We are so excited to make a delicious BLUES-Berry No-Bake Cheesecakes with you! We will also be making Fall Pumpkin Spice Smoothies! SPECIAL GUEST The Alycat will be joining us, along with Author Alysson Foti Bourque will be giving us a special book read! Each parent and child pair will be making 4 mini blueberry cheesecakes, and each guest will have a pumpkin smoothie. October 12 – 15 :: Festivals Acadien et Creoles is a fun family event for all including 5 music stages, Bayou Food Festivals, chefs demo, fine arts and crafts, children’s activities, and LA sports tent. The festival is located at Girard Park and is free to the public. The Cutting of the Boudin officially kicks it off at 5:00pm on October 13.

October 14 :: Footprints Forever 5k Walk/Run – 7:00am – 11:00am at River Ranch Town Square – Maddie’s Footprints is gearing up for our Eighth Annual Footprints Forever 5K Fun Run/Walk! Footprints Forever has become a signature Maddie’s Footprints event as it unites family and friends to celebrate the life of a child. We often call it a birthday party for our angel babies! Not only does the event include a one mile and 5K fun run/walk but also activities for children, music, food, beverages and a remembrance ceremony. Visit HERE for more information.

October 14 :: 17th Annual Zydeco Pancake Breakfast hosted by Kiwanis of Acadiana, 8:00 – 11:00am at Parc International in Downtown Lafayette – Simply put, it’s a fun, family-friendly event in which the entire Lafayette and surrounding communities are invited to attend. Tickets are sold throughout the community for $7.00 each and a ticket entitles the bearer to receive “All You Can Eat” pancakes, sausage, coffee, milk, juice, soft drinks, as well as a Kids Area filled with games, face painting, crafts, a fun jumps and more. Before, during and after your delicious pancakes, participants can enjoy the sounds of the local musical group, Terry and the Zydeco Bad Boys! Kiwanis clubs focus on improving the world by serving children, one child, and one community at a time. This year’s event our Club will embark upon a special project called the ZYDECO PARK. The ZYDECO PARK is a musically themed playground which will be built in downtown Lafayette. The Kiwanis Club of Acadiana has partnered with Downtown Lafayette Unlimited to identity a location in downtown Lafayette upon which to build this new playground. October 21 :: Avery Island Fall Fest hosted by TOBASCO Visitor Center and Jungle Garden – 11:00am – 3:00pm – On Saturday, October 21st, McIlhenny Company will be putting on its 2nd Annual Fall Fest on Avery Island. Hay rides, pumpkin carving, face painting, Halloween-themed children’s games and activities, a pumpkin patch and more will be taking place in Jungle Gardens. Food and drink options will be available for purchase. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online.

October 21, 22, 28, & 29 :: Zoosiana Boo at the Zoo – Boo at the Zoo is a special event fundraiser for the zoo. Costume contest will occur at 12:00pm and 2:00pm each day and is FREE to enter with multiple age brackets and great plush prizes. Local Business booths will be set up on the pathways with coupons and treats. Live entertainment will be taking place each day. Zoosiana candy stations will be set up for trick-or-treating! Broussard Fire Truck, Nickel prize games, and viewing all the wonderful animals are included in your admission cost. Additional amenities that cost are two of the ten games, face painting by Mimzy, sand art, food court with bbq hamburgers and hotdogs, Boo Choo-Choo train ride, Critter Cafe’, ZooLive Animal Show and the Parakeet exhibit. We will have a kiosk for credit cards to purchase tickets for the additional amenities or you may use cash. Visit the Event page for further details.

October 25 :: IVF: What’s It all About hosted by Fertility Answers– from 6:00 – 7:00pm located at Woman’s Foundation, Inc. – Join us for an in-depth look into the assisted reproductive therapy called in vitro fertilization, or IVF. Learn the steps in the IVF process, who is a good candidate and why, and success rates of the procedure. Led by Dr. Susan Conway, fertility specialist at Fertility Answers. Talk will be in the Woman’s Foundation Classroom located on the first floor of Building A on the Women’s & Children’s Hospital campus. Free and open to the public. Find out more HERE.

October 28 :: The Taco Festival hosted by The Dailey Advertiser – at Moncus Park, 12:00 – 6:00pm – A General Admission ticket provides access to taco-topia. Inside the event, you’ll find local restaurants dishing out $2 tacos and bars and beverage stations serving margaritas, beer, water, and soda. The entire festival works on a token system – so you will purchase tokens worth $2 each and use those as cash. Vendors will be on hand to sell other food (mostly desserts) as well. Recurring in October 2017 ::

Every Day from October 2nd – 31st :: Covenant United Methodist Church’s Pumpkin Patch – Monday – Friday 3:00 – 7:00pm, Saturdays 9:00am – 7:00pm, and Sundays 12:00pm – 7:00pm. Join Covenant for their annual pumpkin patch. The event is run by volunteers who wish to share God’s Love with the community and all proceeds benefit missions throughout Acadiana. There are FREE events each weekend including a craft show (featured above), movie night in the patch, a health fair, family fun day, and trick-or-treat in the patch. Follow their Facebook page for more updates on weekend events. 

Every Saturday and Sunday from September 23 – October 29 :: Join Robin Farms for their Pumpkin Patch from 9:00am – 1:00pm each weekend while it lasts. It is free to observe activities at the farm stand or partake in a hay ride or some pumpkin painting for a small fee. Every Friday from October 6 – November 3 :: Bach Lunch hosted by the Lafayette Science Museum Foundation is firing up October 6 beginning at 11:15am. Bach Lunch is a concert series on Fridays  during the Spring and Fall seasons where participants enjoy lunch to the sounds of live music at Parc Sans Souci. Guests are invited to bring their own lunch, or they can purchase a meal through participating restaurants around the Parc. All proceeds benefit the Lafayette Science Museum and help fund future exhibits and educational programs.

Every Saturday :: Lafayette Farmers and Artisans Market at Moncus Park 8:00am – 12:00pm – rain or shine!

Second Saturday of every month :: Art Walk Downtown Lafayette – During 2nd Saturday Art Walk, Downtown comes alive as each independent gallery, studio and art house opens their doors for this free event. Art aficionados and casual patrons alike will leave inspired as they explore the Downtown Lafayette Cultural District. 

Second Saturday of Every Month :: Join the Kitchenary for their Saturday Brunch from 10:00am – 2:30pm! A perfect family outing or a mom and dad day-date. You can also check out their amazing lunch counter five days a week; it’s like having your own personal chef. For a mom’s night out or date night, stay tuned for their regularly scheduled cooking classes.

    Asbury Children’s Ministry has a fantastic idea event September 23 and it is free. Registration is required.

    What about Downtown Alive? Surprised not to see it listed, especially now that they have incorporated extra child friendliness with the play area at the Children’s Museum.
