Lafayette Moms Need to Know Guide :: Your Guide for Things to do in May 2018

It’s May! You may be zipping around already with all that May brings. From end of the season t-ball games, dance recitals, graduations, awards banquets, cramming with your children for those finals, throwing last minute plans together for a summer vacation, and everything else the end of the year throws your way. The good news is school is ALMOST out for summer and the pace of life might just slow back down. With all the activities May brings, let this guide help you plan your month.

May 2018 :: Things to Do in Lafayette

May 1 :: The Lafayette Support Group meeting is for all parents who have a child with autism, the extended family members, college students, professionals and anyone else who would like to learn about autism and get support from other parents. Join them for a Support Group meeting at Deano’s Pizza on Bertrand from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. 

May 4 ::  Beer and Ballet at Dat Dog in downtown Lafayette – Please join us for two of your favorite past times, Beer & Ballet. Lafayette Ballet Theatre presents Beer from Local Breweries along with Celebrity Karaoke combined with Choreography from your LBT Company for the perfect mixture of arts and brew. Throw in the local flavor of gourmet dogs from Dat Dog and you have the perfect combination of a great evening that supports Lafayette Ballet Theatre.

May 4 :: The Learning Train Open Play – Time schedules will allow for parents and children to simply play in a safe and caring environment. The equipment and activities are appropriate for children 6 months – 5 years old. Call or message to reserve your spot. 

May 4 :: The Mulberry Tree hosts May the Fourth Be with You Star Wars Celebration starting at 6:00 pm –  Enjoy Jedi training with Obi Wan Kenobi, interactive Star Wars games, some extra special friends, and Star Wars themed dinner. Everyone must have purchased a ticket to enter. Tickets may be purchased online.

May 4 – 6 :: The Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival is located at Parc Hardy in the Crawfish Capital of the World and kicks off at 4:00 pm on Friday, May 4. The Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival has become one of the largest gatherings of world famous Cajun, Zydeco and Swamp Pop musicians and plays host to over 30 bands on three stages during the three-day festival.  Music fills the air from morning into night at Parc Hardy! There is also plenty of food, crawfish races, Cajun & Zydeco dance contests, arts and crafts, a crawfish eating contest, and a parade. 

May 5 :: Mix It Up hosts CINCO DE MAYO OPEN HOUSE!!! Join us any time between 10:00-12:15 to meet Chef Audrey B. from Top Chef Jr. Season 1! We have a fun filled morning of kids food crafts, Cinco de Mayo food demos and samples, Meet & Greet with Chef Audrey B and the Mix It Up Culinary Coaches!

May 5 :: PLAYday 2018 hosted by the Kids Specialty Center at Women’s & Children’s Hospital and Southwest Louisiana Area Health Education Center – PLAYday 2018 is a Summer Activities Fair & Family Expo is a FREE family event including Exercise Demos, Fun Jumps, Kites, Obstacle Courses, Carnival Style Games, Football & Other Sports, Free Healthy Snacks and MORE! More than 1,500 join us every year! Come see what you’ve been missing!May 2018

May 5 :: Social Derby Day – Join us for the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 5th! We are doing it a little different this year, you don’t need to purchase a ticket to join us. We will be celebrating the derby all day! We will be serving mint juleps in the commemorative Kentucky Derby glasses, we will have Derby themed food specials starting at 4pm, games of chance from 4:00-6:00pm, prizes for best hat and best dressed and live broadcast of the race. May 9 :: Business First – Women Who Mean Business’s monthly meeting is being held at Don’s Seafood Downtown from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm. The meeting is free and attendees are welcome to order and pay for their own lunch items. The objective is to provide a professional environment for businesswomen to exchange referrals to help increase each other’s business, and to provide an educational and personal support network for career oriented women.

May 11 – 12 :: Chicken Salad Chick Mother’s Day weekend celebration. Any guest can enjoy “The Perfect Pair” of two scoops of chicken salad for $5.99. There will be giveaways both days for moms, and one lucky mom will receive an amazing gift basket full of sweet treats! On May 11th only, a  pop up trunk show will also be set up at the Oil Center location including these awesome shopping vendors: Meredith Domengeaux Rybacki, Emily Grace Creations, Sibley Designs, and Adele Elise Designs. Visit your nearest Chicken Salad Chick in Lafayette on those days to get the special and join the fun. 

May 12 :: Mother’s Day Pop Up Shop hosted by Hark Creative. Join six fabulous vendors  from 12:00 – 4:00 pm to sip & shop at a Mother’s Day Pop-Up Shop! They will have mother’s day goodies available to purchase from SIX local vendors: The Ginger Bites • Cookies; Styled. By Michelle Judice • Gift Certificates for Styling Sessions; Thistle Company • Fresh flowers; Elizabeth Simon Fine Art • Original Artwork; MySomm • Wine & Champs; Hark Creative Co. • Paper Goods. Gift wrapping and greeting cards will be available too. It’s a great one stop shop for Mother’s Day gifts! Pop Up Shop located at 1408 W. Pinhook Rd. in Lafayette.

May 12 :: The Family Tree will hold a CycleBar Fundraiser Ride from 12:00 – 1:00 pm – Because the Family Tree is a non-profit agency our programs and many corresponding community events are primarily funded through grants with no cost to the client/participant. However, grant funding is often very specific and doesn’t always cover every need. Very little revenue is generated through our counseling and community education programs, and often isn’t enough to purchase necessary items to enhance existing programs or add additional programs. BUT this is how you can help! Your ride donation is greatly appreciated and well spent. Thank you. Get your ticket to ride.

May 12 :: The Breakfast Club Brunch Crawl The Breakfast Club Brunch Crawl makes its return to Downtown Lafayette on Saturday, May 12th! Tickets are sold in advance ONLY via! Discounted rate of $15 until Sunday, March 25th! 

May 14 & 21 (6 week Monday series through June 25th (skipping May 28))  :: Basin Arts hosts Bumpin’ at Basin Arts, prenatal pilates class two Mondays in May from 5:30 – 6:30 pm. Think prenatal pilates meets light cardio meets stretching meets dance. Non-dancers don’t worry…no experience necessary and we’ll dance a bit mostly for fun so we don’t take ourselves too seriously! Also, you don’t need any pilates experience either. This hour-long class will leave you feeling stronger, more relaxed, and more ready to keep growing that baby in your belly.

May 15 :: The Yoga Garden hosts Candlelight Yoga  – Don’t miss this special evening of yogic sleep in the atmosphere of our intimate candlelit deck. Yoga nidra is a powerful form of yoga that has been practiced for thousands of years as a process of awakening to one’s true self. “Yoga Nidra” means yogic sleep and ventures far beyond deep relaxation to a place of natural peace and quiet that is tremendously healing.

May 16 :: Club Blue Acadiana Spring Social hosted at POUR Restaurant and Bar from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Come have a drink at POUR and learn more about Club Blue! Bring a friend (or many friends) who may be interested in Club Blue, a group of young professionals in the Acadiana area who volunteer for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Acadiana and get together for social events.

May 17 :: Cocktails for the Cure at Ruffino’s on the River, starting at 6:00pm.  Enjoy cocktails and raise money for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to fight blood cancers. Free Admission!

May 17 :: Build You Own Poke Party with Good Eats Kitchen hosted at Tops Appliances and Cabinetry from 6:30 – 8:00 pm. Poke’ Bowl Wednesday comes to life on Thursday night, May 17th. The perfect Mother’s Day celebration gift. Grab Mom and a group of friends, your favorite beverages, and join Good Eats Kitchen Owner Boyer Derise and Head Chef Jacob Hamilton for a Live Action, Fish Prep Demonstration featuring the freshest “Catch of the Day”. Learn what this poke’ thing is all about through trained and experienced culinary professionals. Then, you get to build your very own poke bowl with fresh seafood and a variety of toppings!

May 17 :: The Home Bank White Linen Night 2018 6:00 – 9:00 pm at Parc Lafayette – This event will provide our community an evening filled with art displays and pop-up galleries, live music, dancing, shopping specials, a party atmosphere and some of Lafayette’s best summer people watching in one of the hippest neighborhoods in our city. Admission to this event is free. 

May 20 :: Bayou Festival & Boat Parade – Hosted by Vermillionville from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm!

May 19 & 20 :: Save the Date for Musical Auditions! Madagascar Jr. Camp Role Assessment at Wonderland Performing Arts! Kids ages 8-18 who love to ACT, SING, & DANCE… get ready for a SUMMER EXPERIENCE you’ll never forget! Wonderland Performing Arts is producing their 2nd annual musical production at Zoosiana – Zoo of Acadiana this summer, June 29-July 1! Register for camp and then register for your audition! 

May 28 – 31 :: Summer Cooking Camp at Mix it Up Lafayette – Cook up something creative this summer in our Mix It Up kitchen! Kid friendly recipes for ages 5-12 with new cooking themes and recipes each week! 9:00am-1:00pm (free early drop off 8:30am). Weekly camps all summer! This particular week is Bakery Week!! From homemade cookies to muffins, and FONDANT decorations… this week will be packed with baking!

Every Thursday :: Rhythms on the River in River Ranch Town Square from 5:30 – 8:30 pm  – Music! Food! Fun! We hope to see you there! This concert is free! No ice chests or pets, please. May 3 (Bag of Donuts), May 10 (Keith Frank) 

Every Wednesday :: Cafe V Courtyard Concert Series Spring 2018 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm – This seasons installment of Cafe Vermillionville’s long-running courtyard music series is here! Join them for the must do, mid-week break you need – with great food, drinks, and friends! Reservations for a table are a must so call in advance!

Every Tuesday :: Vermilionville Living Museum & Folklife Park Every Tuesday $5 YOGA EN FRANÇAIS – Vermilionville’s Performance Center, 300 Fisher Road, Lafayette, LA – Wind down after work with 75 minutes of Hatha Yoga en Français with RYT-200 Erin Segura. You don’t need to speak French to attend, but you’ll surely learn a little while here!

Every Saturday :: Lafayette Farmers and Artisans Market at Moncus Park 8:00am – 12:00pm – rain or shine!

Second Saturday of every month :: Art Walk Downtown Lafayette – During 2nd Saturday Art Walk  Downtown comes alive as each independent gallery, studio and art house opens their doors for this free event. Art aficionados and casual patrons alike will leave inspired as they explore the Downtown Lafayette Cultural District.
