Welcome sweet, sweet summertime. Bring on the splash pads, snoballs, slip and slides, and shades! The pace of June is just slow enough to let us set our own pace and schedule. Beat the heat by finding some great indoor activities, or see what outdoor adventures you might find with the help of this handy guide! Start planning the month of June with all that Lafayette has to offer.

June 2018 :: Things to Do in Lafayette

June 2 :: Inside Out FREE Family Event – New Day Community Outreach Presents it’s FREE Family Event!! A private screening of the movie Inside Out will be shown at the Grand 16 on Johnston St. on June 2nd, 2018 to promote mental health awareness. ATTENDEES MUST HAVE TICKET FOR EACH FAMILY MEMBER. We will have door prizes, games, and activities all surrounding the characters of the movie. Admission is FREE, concessions are sold separately by The Grand Theatre. Special Thanks to The Acadiana Regional Advisory Council for sponsoring this event and supporting the mental health of children and families throughout Acadiana!

June 2 :: Family Fun Day at Covenant United Methodist Church hosted by Healthy Blue and the Family Tree – Come play with us during our Family Fun Day! This event is completely FREE and open to the public! There will be lots of fun and games from local community vendors, including The Storybook Headquarters, Discovery Toys, Macaroni Kid, Rise Chiropractic, Project Launch and Willow Charter Academy, just to name a few; as well as a cake walk with yummies from local vendors such as, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Piece of Cake Lafayette and Best Sweets. We will also have door prizes, face painting, fun jumps from Jumpin Jax and food from Raising Cane’s. While you are there, you can get your car seat checked for FREE with technicians from the Louisiana Passenger Safety Task Force. 

June 2 :: Lafayette Public Library Summer Reading Kickoff starting at 10:00am – Zoo-Zoom, LLC will be helping Lafayette Parish Library kick off their Summer Reading Program! Come out to say hello to our critters as well as to pick up a few good books!

June 6 :: Toddler Time at the Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum from 10:00 – 11:00am – Parents and their children will enjoy story time, songs with finger play, participate in a hands-on art project, and may explore the museum after the program. This program is free to attend. Due to the overwhelming attendance the museum has experienced with this program, reservations are required to attend. We ask that you arrive and check in no later than 10 minutes prior to the program starting. If the class is full, the museum will provide you with child appropriate activities for you to partake in the galleries. 

June 8 :: Mix it Up hosts a Chopped Bonus Workshop from 9:00 – 11:00am – If your child loves the show CHOPPED, register them for the “Chopped Bonus Workshop!” This workshop will give your child another opportunity to be creative with their ingredient baskets. Today’s baskets include appetizer and dessert ingredients! The baskets today will be even more challenging and contain some extraordinary ingredients!

June 8 :: Little Pretzel Yoga at The Dailey Method – Join us this summer for Little Pretzel Yoga! Fridays at 12:15pm while you enjoy a Dailey Cycle 45 class!! You get to workout while your children find their zen!! (Multiple dates: June 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th; July 13th, 20th and 27th). $12 per class or $60 for all seven classes. 

June 9 :: Open Play at the Learning Train 9:30 – 11:30am – Open play time schedules will allow for parents and children to simply play in a safe and caring environment. The equipment and activities are appropriate for children 6months-5 years old. Call or message to reserve a space.

June 9 :: Movies in the Parc feature film Paddington 2 at 6:00pm – Kiwanis of Lafayette Movies in the Parc offers family-friendly, movie events featuring crowd favorites under the stars! Gates open at 200 Garfield Street in Downtown Lafayette at 6:00pm and the movies start right at sundown. Kids activities will keep the little ones busy before the movies. The best part of Movies in the Parc is that kids don’t have to sit still during the movie. Parc International is gated, so they are free to spend energy, (so they sleep well at night!) We get it. So bring their wagons, blankets and creature comforts for a night with the  whole family!  Admission is just $3 and free for children 5 and under. Food and beverages will be available on-site for purchase! Parking is available at Parc-Auto du Centreville at Polk and Vermilion Streets and metered spots are free on Saturdays Downtown! 

June 10 :: Sunday Sounds :: Yoga & Sound Healing at the Yoga Garden from 10:00 – 11:15am – Enjoy your Sunday morning with therapeutic, meditative movements, endeavoring in the explorations of breath, relaxation and meditation, while immersed in the glorious vibrations of Sound Healing Therapy. All Levels Welcomed and Encouraged.

June 13 :: Business First – Women Who Mean Business’s monthly meeting is being held at Don’s Seafood Downtown from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm. The meeting is free and attendees are welcome to order and pay for their own lunch items. The objective is to provide a professional environment for businesswomen to exchange referrals to help increase each other’s business, and to provide an educational and personal support network for career oriented women.

June 17 :: Dads Bowl Free on Father’s Day at Lafayette Lanes –  Take dad bowling!!! Dads get 2 FREE games of bowling plus shoe rental on Father’s Day

June 21 :: Parish Brewing Company Beer Dinner at Whole Foods Market 6:00 – 8:00pm – Join us in the Bar at Whole Foods Market for a lovely three-course meal, prepared by the culinary kitchen here at WFM, and expertly paired with 3 of Parish’s latest and greatest brews. Your $45 ticket includes your dinner and your drinks; just bring yourself and prepare for your palate to be pleased. June 21 – 23 :: NEXT Student Conference – The Bayou Church – NEXT is a student conference for middle and high school students where they will have the opportunity to become an empowered and effective leader; stretched to think creatively as a problem-solver; and encouraged to strengthen their relationship with Jesus. NEXT is designed to help students (7th-12th graders) take the NEXT step in their faith journey. Register online.

June 22 ::  Aha Gazelle Concert at The Bayou Church, 8:00pm – Join us on June 22 for a concert with New Orleans rapper Aha Gazelle and special guest LeTrainiump! Aha Gazelle’s energetic and sincere message of hope, strength, and non-conformity has captured audiences around the country. Anyone (12 and up) is invited. Purchase tickets online for $10 in advance or $15 at the door if space available.

June 23 :: It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s certainly not superman! Wait, it’s a unicorn! And, it’s a Unicorn-Themed Party for Kids at Vermilionville! Bring your kids, their friends, the neighborhood group, the Kids’ Ministry or make it a special day with your niece, nephew, cousin or godchild for an afternoon of glitz and glamour. During this festive event, kids will enjoy crafts, activities, games, food, beverages and a chance to just have fun. And, don’t forget to dress participants in unicorn-themed attire and/or costume. Adults, join in and dress up, too. The more, the merrier. The cost is $25 per child. Space is limited to 20, so register early. 

June 25 :: Lafayette Moms Blog’s Mom Strong at Pure Barre 10:00 am – Come beat the Monday madness with other Lafayette moms! All guests receive Pure Barre socks, a swag bag, and lunch. Space is limited and you MUST register in advance. $10 admission.

June 29 – July 1 :: Wonderland Performing Arts proudly presents Madagascar – A Musical Adventure Jr. at Zoosiana – Zoo of Acadiana in the Zootorium! Tickets are $10 and can be purchased on Eventbrite. **10% of all ticket sales will be donated to the Zoo!**Join Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe, Gloria the hip hip Hippo and, of course, those hilarious, plotting penguins as they bound onto your stage in the musical adventure of a lifetime. Based on the smash DreamWorks animated motion picture, Madagascar – A Musical Adventure JR. follows all of your favorite crack-a-lackin’ friends as they escape from their home in New York’s Central Park Zoo and find themselves on an unexpected journey to the madcap world of King Julien’s Madagascar.

All Summer :: Free bowling at Acadiana Lanes all summer long! Kids bowl free all summer, two games a day 8:00 – 11:00am Monday through Friday, sign up today!

Every Monday :: Basin Arts hosts Bumpin’ at Basin Arts, prenatal pilates class Mondays in June from 5:30 – 6:30 pm. Think prenatal pilates meets light cardio meets stretching meets dance. Non-dancers don’t worry…no experience necessary and we’ll dance a bit mostly for fun so we don’t take ourselves too seriously! Also, you don’t need any pilates experience either. This hour-long class will leave you feeling stronger, more relaxed, and more ready to keep growing that baby in your belly.

Multiple Dates Throughout Summer :: Safe Sitter and Body Talk (for boys and girls) are being offered by Woman’s Foundation on multiple dates throughout the summer. Safe Sitter is a medically-accurate course to help young teens aged 11 and up feel more confident in their ability to care for younger children. Topics covered include infant and child CPR, caring for a choking infant or child, injury prevention and management, behavior management, safety for the sitter, child care essentials and more. This class can even help young teens feel more comfortable staying home alone. The Body Talk class covers the basics of puberty for young adolescences. Perfect for children currently going through puberty or children who are showing the first signs of puberty or have friends who are showing signs of puberty. The instructor will discuss topics such as the five stages of development, good hygiene habits, feelings and emotions. An in-depth explanation and discussion of the menstrual cycle is included in the class for girls.

Every Tuesday :: Vermilionville Living Museum & Folklife Park Every Tuesday $5 YOGA EN FRANÇAIS – Vermilionville’s Performance Center, 300 Fisher Road, Lafayette, LA – Wind down after work with 75 minutes of Hatha Yoga en Français with RYT-200 Erin Segura. You don’t need to speak French to attend, but you’ll surely learn a little while here!

Every Saturday :: Lafayette Farmers and Artisans Market at Moncus Park 8:00am – 12:00pm – rain or shine!

Second Saturday of every month :: Art Walk Downtown Lafayette – During 2nd Saturday Art Walk  Downtown comes alive as each independent gallery, studio and art house opens their doors for this free event. Art aficionados and casual patrons alike will leave inspired as they explore the Downtown Lafayette Cultural District.
